In Other News

As is usually the case on major news stories, we have no idea what's going on in the rest of the world. Here are some briefs of today's other news:

  • Florida gas lines ease
    POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Simple tasks like buying gas, cooking food and even turning on the lights got a little easier Friday, with power restored to nearly half the homes and businesses that lost it during Hurricane Wilma.
  • Iranians protest Israel
    TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's ultraconservative president — spurning international outrage over his remarks about Israel — joined more than a million demonstrators who flooded the streets of the capital and other major cities Friday to back his call for the destruction of the Jewish state. Elsewhere, The Vatican on Friday denounced statements denying the right of Israel to exist, and Pope Benedict XVI condemned human trafficking and called for just treatment of women migrants.
  • Sunnis join campaign
    BAGHDAD — A Sunni Arab coalition submitted its list of candidates for the December election Friday, signaling the intention of many Sunnis to join the political process despite their failure to block ratification of the new constitution.
  • GDP grew at 3.8% in Q3
    WASHINGTON — The economy shook off headwinds from hurricanes Katrina and Rita to grow at a faster-than-expected 3.8 percent annual rate in the third quarter, a Commerce Department report showed Friday.
  • Syria told to oust terrorists
    WASHINGTON — The U.S., United Nations, Russia, and the European Union issued a joint demand on Friday that Syria close the offices of Islamic Jihad in Damascus. Islamic Jihad claims responsibility for a bombing in Hadera this week, in which five Israelis were killed.
  • Rosa Parks to lie in Capitol
    WASHINGTON — Rosa Parks, the civil rights activist who passed away on Monday, will lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda this Sunday. She is the first woman and the second African-American to receive this honor, by a resolution passed in Congress today.
